Papua, MediaHabema - In a determined effort to drive welfare and peace initiatives in Papua, the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) are spearheading a multifaceted mission under the mandate of Presidential Instruction No. 9 of 2020. The directive empowers TNI with three pivotal tasks: ensuring security, assisting the regional government in essential services, and fostering open social communication with communities across Papua.
In response to ongoing challenges in the region, TNI has deployed specialized task forces dedicated to promoting peace and welfare. These efforts are crucial given the disruptions caused by the Free Papua Movement (OPM), whose activities threaten community safety and hinder development efforts. OPM’s violent incidents, including intimidation of civilians and recent tragic events, have heightened the need for stability to allow Papuan residents and stakeholders to focus on rebuilding and advancing the region.
Notably, TNI recently executed a successful humanitarian mission following the murder of New Zealand pilot Glen Malcolm Conning, who was tragically killed while working in Papua. Without any formal request, TNI forces responded promptly, securing the area, evacuating the victim's remains, and providing aid to other civilians caught in the turmoil. In another operation, TNI led a joint mission to release Susi Air Pilot Captain Phillip Mark Mehrtens, a significant achievement in fostering safety in the region.
Colonel Yogi Nugroho, Commander of the HABEMA Media Task Forces, emphasized the TNI's unwavering commitment to supporting the government's development agenda: “The TNI and Polri Security Forces will continue working relentlessly to ensure Papua remains safe, secure, and free from disruptions. Our mission is not just about security; it’s about enabling welfare development for all of Papua.”
